[ Editor’s note: The MPAA and most media companies argue that you can’t legally copy or convert commercial DVDs for any reason. We (and others) think that, if you own a DVD, you should be. Currently, the law isn’t entirely clear one way or the other. So our advice is: If you don’t own it, don’t do it. If you do own it, think before you rip.] Looking to liberate the movies in your DVD collection from the confines of their plastic-and-metal prison so you can enjoy them on your iPhone, iPod, iPad, and Apple TV? Well look no further—all you need to do is get some free software and follow a few steps. (Note that this guide pertains only to DVDs. To learn more about dealing with HD discs, read our story about.) Step one: Install the software To rip a DVD with HandBrake, you need to. ![]() The latest version works on 64-bit Macs running OS X 10.6 or later. But HandBrake doesn’t include the software needed to decrypt commercial DVDs, so you also need to install, an open-source library that can circumvent the Content Scramble System (CSS) used on DVDs. Dec 13, 2018 - Here's how you can copy them to your Mac! To avoid legal issues, converter software like HandBrake purposefully omits the installation of. If the above does not solve your issue, someone may be able to help via HandBrake’s Community support channels. HandBrake for Mac HandBrake does not launch. (You should, of course, only rip DVDs that you’ve purchased.) The first time you launch HandBrake and attempt to scan a DVD, the software will inform you that you need additional decrypting software and will offer to send you to a page where you can download the libdvdcss installer (currently, although you can always find the latest version ). Run that installer, and it will put libdvdcss where it belongs on your drive. Now you’re ready to rip. One more thing. Alternatively—and especially if you encounter problems getting HandBrake to work with your DVDs—you can use a separate app to decrypt your DVDs, leaving you with a Video_TS folder containing unencrypted files that HandBrake can then deal with easily. Some good choices are The Little App Factory’s $25 and DVDSuki Software’s $25. (Both can also do some video conversion.) Step two: Insert a DVD and pick what to rip Now insert your DVD into your Mac’s DVD drive and launch HandBrake. By default, the app opens a dialog box and ask you to select the DVD mounted on your Mac (you can turn off auto-prompting in the General pane of HandBrake’s preferences if you prefer). Choose your DVD and click Open, and HandBrake then scans the DVD for the titles it contains. Once the scan is complete, HandBrake chooses what it thinks is the main title, but you can click the pop-up menu next to Title and choose the item you want to encode. Generally speaking, the title with the longest duration is the DVD’s main feature. HandBrake’s main interface. Want to make sure you’ve chosen the right title before you start encoding? Pick the one you think you want, then click the Preview Window button and a new window opens up. From there you can scroll through ten still images from the title or, if that’s not good enough, choose to encode and watch 15 to 240 seconds of the title (in 15-second increments). Bender’s the king, baby! Yep, that’s the episode I wanted. If you encounter problems such as, or a, you’ve run into copy-protection scheme meant to thwart ripping. In that case, launch Apple’s DVD Player application, and navigate through the warnings, ads, and previews until you’re playing the main feature. Then choose Go > Title from the menu bar, and find the title with a chek mark next to it. In HandBrake choose File > Open Source (Title Specific), select your DVD, and enter that title number in the box and click Open Title. Want to rip everything on a particular disc? There’s a button for that.

Almost all of us by now know what a USB port is and does. More and more devices nowadays can be charged or powered through these ports. From providing us with easy data storage in thumb drives, to (yes, this is serious people), USB has become a staple in the way technology runs and improves our lives. Like most technology, USB has developed, changed, and greatly improved since its introduction in 1996. Despite our dependence on USB, many of us are still in the dark on what these improvements are and what they mean for the way we use technology. Thankfully, Mac Enthusiasts has put together our best answers to your USB 3.0 questions and beyond! Jul 24, 2015 Mac Mini (Late 2012): 2.3GHz, Quad-core i7, 16 GB USB Externals: Primarily a couple 2.0 WDs, a 3.0 WD, and I will be getting a 3.0 SSD soon. **Also, if anyone can recommend a USB 3.0 Hub that would work well with a 2012 Mac Mini, there seems to be a lot of controversy when it comes to 3.0 Hubs and 2012 Mac's. Mac mini (2018) MacBook Pro models from 2016 or later; MacBook Air (Retina, 13-inch, 2018) MacBook Pro (pictured), MacBook Air, iMac Pro, iMac, and Mac mini have multiple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports. If your Mac has only one port like this, it's a MacBook with USB-C. That port supports all but the Thunderbolt solutions in this article. ![]() What are the differences between USB 1.1, 2.0, and 3.0? Universal Serial Bus 1.1 was first developed as a universal means to replacing serial and parallel ports. These ports were once very large, and any device to be used through them required expansion cards. The growth of these ports really jumped in the late 90’s when most mice and keyboards came with this as an option to connect. ![]() In the year 2000, USB 2.0 was introduced as a much faster option (from 12mbps for USB 1.1. To 480 mbps for 2.0). It gained more traction as an actual universal option in the mid-to-late 2000’s. In 2008, USB 3.0 was introduced. Amongst other helpful updates from 2.0, USB 3.0 is ten times faster, working at speeds as fast as 5 Gigabytes. What else does USB 3.0 offer? Unlike USB 2.0, USB 3.0 offers quick duplex data transfer. This means that over USB 3.0, information can be read and written at the same high speed simultaneously. Because USB 3.0 offers 80% more power than USB 2.0, you can power even more devices (up to 4) from a single port! That’s something to think about if you’re using it to charge your phone and warm your coffee. Last but not least, USB 3.0 has suspended device polling. USB 2.0 used to rely on active data transfers, usually draining power from any idle device. Now, with 3.0, you have better power management for inactive, connected devices. Do I have USB 3.0 on my Mac computer? If you have a 2012 Mac or newer you are already working with USB 3.0 ports. If you want to learn more about it, or if you have an older Mac and see which ports apply, you can find out through “About This Mac” in the Apple menu. From there, select “System Report” or “System Profiler.” Click on “USB” on the left-hand side to reveal which ports are USB 3.0. From here, you can also see the speed capabilities of any device you have plugged in. What does it mean if my port says Hi-Speed Bus, instead of SuperSpeed? If you have a device already plugged into your USB port while you’re looking at the specs on your USB ports, you may see that one is showing that it is a “USB 3.0 Hi-Speed Bus” while the other, unused port, shows it’s is a “USB 3.0 SuperSpeed Bus.” This means that you are running a USB 2.0 out of the other port. Both ports are the same, with the same capabilities, but if you run USB 2.0 out of a USB 3.0 port, you will only have the ability to use the Hi-Speed option. I don’t have USB 3.0. How can I get it? If you’ve checked your Mac’s capabilities and realize you do not have a USB 3.0 port, but you’d like to have the capability, there are external USB 3.0 hubs available. You must be sure you are getting a device that actually upgrades USB 2.0 to 3.0 and doesn’t just create more ports. Some suggest, Thunderbolt 2 Express HD dock. You can also always consider upgrading your Mac laptop. Mac Enthusiasts sells refurbished Mac laptops with more dependability and better support. Check out our webstore for some of our offerings. Want to sell your Mac back to us? How to format a startup drive for a Mac If you want to format a drive that will be used as your Mac’s startup disk, the procedure is a little different from formatting it for use as a secondary. Format a disk for Windows computers using Disk Utility on Mac. If you installed Windows on your Mac using Boot Camp, you can format a disk or volume as a secondary volume to use with the Windows operating system. Assuming Vista or 7 (this should work on XP, 8, 8.1, and 10, as well) and that the disk is not showing up under My Computer at all: • Connect your disk. • Run cmd as an Administrator. • Run diskpart.exe. If you need help in this program. • list disk • Find the disk that corresponds to your USB disk. Select disk n where n is the number of the disk. Confirm that you're using the right disk with detail disk. • clean (Warning: This command erases the disk's partition information. Any data on the disk will no longer be accessible.) • create partition primary. No size is needed if you want to use the whole disk • active. Marks the partition as potentially bootable. • format fs=fat32 quick. ![]() You can choose NTFS or exFAT instead of FAT32 if you want. (Note: Windows 10 limits FAT32 to 4GB. I recommend using exFAT instead, which is essentially a newer version of the same format.) • assign. ![]() Assigns the disk a drive letter. • exit to quit. If you're still having problems with the disk after trying this, you might try omitting the quick from step 9 to do a full format. That will take a very long time and usually isn't necessary, but may help uncover physical damage to the disk. In some cases you might need to re-initialize the disk. As above, this will destroy the data on the disk (or, rather, your ability to access it). To do that from diskpart.exe: • list disk • select disk n • attributes disk clear readonly. This command will unset the read-only flag on the disk. You can see the current attributes with attributes disk or detail disk. • online disk. Sets the device status to online if it's been disabled. • convert mbr. Converts the disk to MBR format, which will work just fine for most disks. If you've got a USB disk larger than 2 terabytes, however, you'll want to use convert gpt instead. I'm not sure if the above commands are all identical on older OSs (XP). Compatibility is a major concern when people have to shift to macOS. If you think finding the right software is a problem you’re wrong. In a few days or weeks, you can get all the macOS alternative apps you need. The real problem comes when you need to deal with accessories. Let’s not talk about the advanced ones like the printers or scanners, but come to something basic – USB Drives. As you know, USB Drives are quite suitable when you need quick data transfer. Getting the best performance, though, requires you to erase and format a USB Drive on your Mac itself. Let’s put everything in a practical sense now. You have recently purchased a computer that runs on and you also got a USB Drive. Depending on the purpose of the pen drive, you need to make certain decisions during the formatting process. In this article, we have a quite-detailed guide on how to erase and format a USB Drive and keep it accessible on the devices you like. This guide will be suitable for both beginners as well as those who want to try some experiments with File System techniques on your Mac. Essentially speaking, we’ll help you format a USB drive in the right manner. Before we start the tutorial, there are a few things to know! Possible Reasons for Formatting USB Drive using Mac Some of the common reasons why you may need to format a new/old USB Drive via macOS are as follows. Try to confirm the reason before we move ahead, because there may be some minute differences in the whole process. • You need to delete all the files, and there are too many files to be individually deleted. • The drive is currently based on an incompatible file system. You need to change it. • You’re confused whether the USB Drive has a malware inside. So, you need to clean it up. If you can relate to the above-mentioned reasons, you can go ahead and format the USB Drive. For the first and third scenarios, you can simply go with traditional USB Formatting. You will need more insight if you’re formatting the drive for the sake of advanced compatibility. The main benefits of using NFS instead of SMB are its low protocol overhead (which allows it to send data across a network more quickly) and its use of simple to authenticate users rather than username/password combinations. This part bears repeating, as many people are confused on this point and try to create usernames and passwords to get Kodi to work with NFS: NFS does not use usernames or passwords as logins; it uses a UNIX-based 'userID' (UID) alone. This page describes how to share media files using the SMB/CIFS protocol, also known as Windows file sharing, that are on a computer running Mac OS X.
